When people talk about calf performance, they often focus on protein, fat, and feeding rates. Those things matter. But modern science keeps pointing to another major piece of the puzzle: gut health.
That is where prebiotics and probiotics come in.
Put simply, probiotics are live beneficial microorganisms given in adequate amounts to support health, while prebiotics are ingredients that selectively feed beneficial microbes already living in the gut. In other words, one adds good bugs, the other helps the right bugs thrive.
Why does that matter in calves?
Because the first weeks of life are when the gut, immune system, and rumen are all developing at speed. If calves get off to a poor start with digestive upset, inconsistent intakes, or scours, it can drag growth rates back fast. DairyNZ also highlights that early calf health and hygiene are critical because setbacks in the first months can stop calves from reaching their genetic potential.
The research on probiotics in calves is now fairly encouraging. A 2023 meta-analysis found that probiotic supplementation improved growth performance, feed intake, feed efficiency, rumen fermentation, immune and antioxidant capacity, and health in pre-weaned dairy calves, although results varied depending on dose, strains used, and how they were fed.
A newer 2025 meta-analysis of 55 studies also found probiotics improved average daily gain, total dry matter intake, and starter intake in dairy calves. The same paper noted that results were not identical across all products, which is important, because not every probiotic works the same way.
Prebiotics are also promising, especially because they help shape the gut environment rather than simply adding live microbes. But the science there is a bit more mixed. Reviews of the calf literature note that some studies show better growth, feed efficiency, and lower pathogen shedding, while others show little difference. That does not mean prebiotics do not matter. It means product choice, dose, calf health status, and the wider rearing system all matter.
The practical takeaway is this: prebiotics and probiotics are not magic dust, but they are far more than a fad. In a well-run calf system, they can support gut stability, digestive function, resilience, and ultimately growth. And when you are trying to raise strong calves with good genetic potential, protecting the gut early makes a lot of sense.
