The best calf rearers do not wait for the first scour, the first coughing calf, or the first rough week to start solving problems.
They start before the calves even arrive.
A lot of calf health issues that get blamed on weather, bad luck, or milk replacer actually begin with the shed itself. If calves are going into a space that is dirty, damp, stale or poorly set up, they are already behind from day one. A well-prepared shed will not remove every challenge from the season, but it gives calves a much better chance to stay healthy, keep drinking, and grow evenly.
In New Zealand, where spring conditions can shift quickly, shed prep is not just a tidy-up job. It is one of the foundations of a good rearing season.
A clean-looking shed is not always a clean shed
One of the biggest mistakes in calf rearing is assuming that if the shed looks reasonably clean, it is ready to go.
It often is not.
Old bedding, manure, dust, feed residue and built-up organic matter can hang around in corners, under rails, around troughs, along walls and in places that are easy to miss. Those leftovers matter because they can carry bacteria, viruses and parasite pressure into the new season.
This is where people can come unstuck. The shed gets a quick clean-out, fresh bedding goes down, and everyone feels like the job is done. Then calves arrive and within a couple of weeks there are dirty tails, a few slow drinkers, and a nagging sense that things are getting harder than they should.
Good shed prep starts with doing the unglamorous job properly.
Cleaning comes first, disinfecting comes second
Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing.
Before any disinfectant goes near the shed, all old bedding, waste, dirt and residue need to be removed. Disinfectant does not work properly through muck. Organic matter protects bugs and makes disinfecting far less effective.
A solid pre-season process usually looks like this:
Strip all old bedding and waste out completely.
Scrape and sweep thoroughly.
Wash floors, walls, gates, rails, feeders and troughs.
Allow the shed to dry.
Then disinfect where appropriate.
Then let it dry again before fresh bedding goes in.
The drying step is often rushed, but it matters. A wet shed is not a good starting point for young calves.
Dryness is one of the biggest advantages you can give calves
A dry shed makes life easier for calves and for the people rearing them.
Calves lying in damp conditions use more energy trying to stay warm. Moist bedding also increases contamination pressure and quickly turns a tidy shed into a stress point. If the shed still feels clammy in the morning, if bedding is picking up moisture too fast, or if there are cold wet spots forming, calves are already under avoidable pressure.
A rearer in Southland might be fighting cold and wet. A rearer in Waikato might be battling humidity and a shed that never seems to fully air out. Different regions, same principle: calves do better in a dry environment.
Fresh, absorbent bedding should be in place before the first calves arrive, and it needs to be enough to keep them up off cold floors and away from dampness. If calves are ending up on bare concrete or compacted wet bedding early in the season, the system needs adjusting.
Ventilation matters, but so does shelter
A good calf shed should feel fresh, not windy.
That balance is important. Young calves need clean air, but they do not need cold draughts blowing directly onto them. Poor ventilation allows moisture, ammonia, dust and pathogens to build up. That increases respiratory pressure and makes the shed harder to manage. On the other hand, too much direct airflow at calf level can chill calves and add stress.
The goal is steady airflow through the shed without exposing calves to harsh draughts where they are lying. If the shed smells stale first thing in the morning, if windows are fogging, or if the air feels heavy, that is a sign the shed is not clearing moisture and stale air properly.
Good ventilation is often noticed most when it is missing.
Feeders, troughs and drinkers deserve proper attention
A shed can look tidy while trouble is building around the feeding equipment.
Milk feeders, teats, mixing gear, water troughs and meal feeders are all high-contact areas. If they are not cleaned and reset properly before the season starts, they can become one of the fastest ways to spread contamination through a group of calves.
Water troughs are especially easy to overlook. Calves need access to clean water from an early age, and there is not much value in preparing the shed well if the drinking points are dirty or hard to keep clean. The same goes for meal feeders. Feed needs to stay clean, dry and clear of bedding and manure.
Good shed prep does not stop at the walls and floor. It includes every point calves will touch.
Good systems feel calm before the pressure arrives
One of the best signs that a shed is ready is that it feels simple.
The bedding is in. The pens are laid out properly. Feeders and troughs are clean. There is no stale smell. There are no obvious wet patches. Staff can walk through the space and feel that it is under control.
That matters, because once calves start arriving every day, it gets much harder to deeply clean, redesign, fix drainage issues or rethink the basic setup. The more you get right before the season starts, the more smoothly everything else tends to run once the pressure comes on.
A simple pre-season calf shed checklist
Before the first calves arrive, it is worth asking:
Has every bit of old bedding and waste been removed?
Have floors, walls, rails, troughs and feeders been properly washed?
Has the shed had enough time to dry before fresh bedding goes down?
Is the bedding deep, clean and absorbent?
Does the shed feel fresh without cold draughts on the calves?
Are there obvious wet spots, blocked drains or dirty corners that need sorting now?
Are feeders and drinkers easy to clean every day?
Is the shed genuinely ready, or just looking tidy from a distance?
Those questions are simple, but they prevent a lot of avoidable trouble.
