Kid rearing can go well for days, then turn on you quickly.
That is one reason it catches people out. A pen of kids can look lively enough, the milk is being mixed, and everyone feels the system is under control. Then a few start to look rough in the tail, a couple get tucked up, one seems empty and cold, and before long the whole shed feels like it is slipping sideways. In New Zealand, a lot of goat rearers still describe these early warning signs as “just a bit of scours” or “one of those things,” but the real cost of that thinking is usually paid in lost growth, treatment time, setbacks, and sometimes deaths.
The basics are still the basics. NZ goat-rearing guidance says newborn kids need colostrum first for the first 1–3 days, then a gradual move onto whole milk or powdered milk, with kids receiving at least about 10% of bodyweight in milk daily. Other NZ guidance for lambs and kids stresses that young animals have small stomachs, so large feeds can contribute to discomfort or bloat, and that weaning should be gradual, with kids eating solid feed, chewing the cud and drinking water freely before milk is removed.
But where kid systems often come unstuck is not in the headline plan — it is in the pressure points around sanitation, ventilation, stocking density and weaning.
Take a composite Waikato goat-rearing example. The kids start okay, but as numbers build the pens get tighter, bedding gets wetter, and milk-feeding gear is harder to keep spotless every single feed. A few kids start scouring at four to six weeks. Some are slow, some lose bloom, and one or two go off feed. That is the stage where people often debate whether it is milk, worms, weather, or “just kids being kids.” But in that age range, coccidiosis needs to be firmly on the radar. MSD Vet Manual notes that outbreaks of diarrhoea in goat kids older than about four weeks under suboptimal environmental conditions are consistent with coccidiosis risk, and that control depends heavily on clean bedding, raised feed and water troughs, lower stocking density and moving animals away from contaminated areas where possible.
That matters because coccidiosis is not just a dirty-tail problem. It damages the gut, knocks appetite, slows growth and can leave kids behind even when they recover. Broader goat husbandry guidance makes the same point: prevention relies on stopping kids from consuming faecal contamination through feed, troughs and water, and on maintaining a dry environment.
Pneumonia is the other big one that often travels beside digestive stress. In goat kids, the classic set-up is crowding, stale air, damp bedding, weather swings, and a group already under pressure from poor early immunity or feed disruption. Veterinary sources consistently identify inadequate ventilation, crowding, poor nutrition, stress and failure of passive transfer as common contributors to pneumonia outbreaks in small ruminants.
This is where good rearers tend to look different. They do not wait for the crash. They react to the early signs: slower drinking, more coughing, dirty tails in one corner of the shed, or a mob that has gone too quiet. They understand that goat kids can go downhill quickly and that “a little setback” in week three or four can become a real growth gap by weaning.
There is also a useful newer lesson around weaning style. A 2023 study on dairy goat kids found that gradually weaned kids had higher creep feed intakes during weaning, higher water intake after weaning, and indications of improved average daily gain compared with abruptly weaned kids. Abruptly weaned kids also visited the milk station more often after milk removal, suggesting more stress. The authors concluded that gradual weaning is a promising on-farm strategy and may improve welfare without increasing rearing costs.
That lines up neatly with what many experienced rearers already sense in practice: the smoother the transition, the better the kid. Fast, hard changes often look efficient on paper but cost you in performance. NZ guidance reflects that same principle, recommending gradual milk removal and ensuring kids are genuinely eating solid feed and drinking water before weaning.
For New Zealand conditions, the hidden cost is usually not one dramatic disease event. It is a run of manageable-looking problems that all chip away at performance: mild scour, damp pens, kids eating feed off the ground, air that smells stale in the morning, too many in one pen, then a rough weaning. None of that sounds catastrophic by itself. Together, it can take the shine right off a rearing season.
Practical takeaway
In kid rearing, do not normalise poor dung, poor air, or poor growth. If kids are scouring after four weeks, think beyond “just milk” and consider contamination pressure and coccidiosis risk. Keep feed and water off the ground, stay on top of bedding, avoid crowding, and make weaning gradual enough that kids are already eating and coping before milk disappears.
The best kid-rearing systems are usually the ones that feel calm, clean and consistent. Not because nothing ever goes wrong — but because problems are picked up while they are still small.
