Essentials of calf milk replacer feeding, care and storage
Calf
  • Store milk replacer in a dry, cool, rodent-free environment to avoid contamination and spoiling
  • Rat bait as necessary
  • Mix milk powder prior to feeding, and never on the day before. Settling can occur and milk will be infected with bacterial growth. This is a common source of infection
  • Feed calves warm milk as energy will not be consumed heating cold milk up to blood temperature for easy digestion
  • Mix powder thoroughly in warm water at approximately 40 deg. Never use water above 45 degrees Celsius. Add cold water to attain correct temperature of 36 deg
  • Use a thermometer if new to calf rearing
  • Always use clean, fresh water. Rinse and clean all equipment thoroughly after every feeding and disinfect equipment regularly. Ensure teats do not become blocked
  • Increase feeding levels gradually to avoid potential protein scours
  • When changing powders, i.e. Premium to Whey after 2 weeks, introduce change gradually. 75% old-25% new, and increase daily
  • Be observant at feeding. Look out for bullying, and teat blockage. Watch for slow feeders
  • Preferably use individual compartment feeders for at least 3 weeks
  • Consistent feeding time and careful observation are paramount in spotting an ailing or hungry calf early
  • Have clean ad-lib water available at all times, and clean receptacles when calf milk feeders are cleaned
